FG Launches Strategy to Reform Nigeria's Criminal Justice System

On Thursday, the Nigerian Federal Government introduced a strategy aimed at overhauling the criminal justice system during a high-level stakeholder coordination meeting in Abuja. The initiative seeks to transform Nigeria's legal framework to ensure efficient practice and respect for rights within the system.

Attorney General Abubakar Malami emphasized the importance of coordinating the criminal justice chain, warning that weak inter-agency collaboration could lead to missed cases and rights violations. A new action plan has been designed to bridge gaps and convert broad reform objectives into measurable outcomes with defined timelines.

Malami clarified that the restoration of justice structures should complement the rule of law without substituting for strict measures against grave offenses. Evbu Igbinedion, Executive Secretary of the Administrative Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), announced a strategic shift towards a uniform national action plan to harmonize legal procedures across Nigeria, noting that the implementation of state criminal justice laws remains fragmented.

She stressed that success hinges on collaboration with civil society organizations and law enforcement agencies, alongside sustainable funding and oversight.
