On October 21, the Federal Government of Nigeria formed a technical committee aimed at accelerating livestock development and staple crop production to bolster food security. The committee was constituted by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima during a high-level meeting focused on agricultural sector performance at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The committee's mandate includes expediting strategic interventions in the agricultural sector, particularly targeting wheat production and livestock development. It comprises representatives from various federal ministries, including Agriculture and Food Security, Water Resources and Sanitation, and Livestock Development, among others.
The committee will be coordinated by Ms Marion Moon, the Technical Adviser to the Vice President on Agriculture. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, emphasized the need to address challenges faced by farmers and to promote all-year-round farming.
