Nigeria's Livestock Minister Launches Feed Policy Framework

The Federal Government has created an implementation framework for the National Feed and Fodder Policy aimed at transforming Nigeria's livestock sector. Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, announced this initiative on October 19, 2026, in Abuja during a three-day stakeholders’ workshop.
The Minister highlighted that adequate, affordable, and quality feed is essential for sustainable livestock development, as feed and fodder constitute about 70 percent of livestock production costs. He pointed out that seasonal shortages of pasture and water lead to conflicts between farmers and pastoralists.
Maiha advocated for a shift from unmanaged natural grazing to organized, commercially viable feed production systems to ensure year-round availability. He also encouraged the use of agricultural by-products, such as rice straw, to enhance livestock nutrition, particularly in rice-producing areas like Kebbi, Niger, Jigawa, and Benue States.
The Minister emphasized the need for better resource utilization and improved storage to address feed shortages.
