FG Reaffirms Commitment to State Police for Security

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to police reform, declaring the establishment of state police as essential for national security. This affirmation was made in a press statement from the Ministry of Police Affairs following a high-level meeting held in Abuja on March 25, 2026.

Minister Ibrahim Gaidam emphasized the need to decentralize the police structure to enhance community safety and improve intelligence gathering. He noted that the current security landscape requires innovative local solutions, making state police a necessity rather than an option.

Gaidam commended Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu for his proactive leadership and swift implementation of policies aimed at improving police efficiency nationwide. Professor Olu Ogunsakin, chairman of the steering committee for state police establishment, outlined ongoing efforts to develop a practical framework for successful implementation, aiming to strengthen public safety and trust in law enforcement institutions.

The meeting marked a significant milestone in the government's broader police reform agenda.
