Nigeria's Minister Confirms Readiness for State Police

On Thursday, during a visit to the Central Crisis Communication Centre in Abuja, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris stated that Nigeria is prepared to create state police, contingent upon the establishment of a necessary legal framework. He highlighted that decentralizing police is crucial to tackling the country's evolving security challenges, a priority for President Bola Tinubu.

Idris urged the National Assembly to enact the required legislation to facilitate this reform. He also discussed the importance of strengthening community systems alongside security reforms, particularly in the digital era where information spreads rapidly.

The Minister welcomed proposals for a national crisis communication hub and emphasized the need for real-time monitoring and coordination to combat misinformation. He noted that a symposium scheduled for November 2025 would produce recommendations to modernize Nigeria's crisis communication system.

President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to establishing state police to curb rising security threats, urging the leadership of the 10th Senate to pursue constitutional amendments for this purpose.
