Nigeria Redeploys Police to Enhance Security After Attack

Following a deadly attack in Kwara State that reportedly left 75 villagers dead, the Nigerian government has redeployed police officers from VIP escort duties to focus on core community policing functions. The announcement was made by Minister Mohan Idri on February 13, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture.

This redeployment is expected to improve security presence in affected states, including Kwara, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the Kwara attack, describing it as a "beastly" act and part of a desperate campaign targeting civilians.

The government has also launched a coordinated offensive named Operation Savannah Shield, which involves deploying military personnel and police to reinforce security assets. This initiative aims to enhance intelligence capabilities and rapid response protocols.

The redeployment follows a directive from President Tinubu to correct the disproportionate allocation of police personnel, ensuring that community policing is prioritized.
