FG Cuts Textbook Assessment Fees, Approves Publisher Refunds

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a reduction in fees for textbook assessment and ranking under the National Textbook Ranking System, as stated by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC). The assessment fee has been decreased from ₦2,000 to ₦1,500 per page, a 25% reduction, while the ranking fee has been lowered from ₦1 million to ₦750,000 per textbook title.

This decision aims to alleviate financial burdens on publishers and encourage their participation in the new textbook quality assurance program. Refunds will be issued to publishers who previously paid the higher fees, with details of the refund process to be communicated later.

The revised fees are effective immediately, and compliance is necessary for the smooth implementation of the National Textbook Ranking System, which is set to commence in September 2026. Education Minister Dr.

Tunji Alausa emphasized that this initiative is designed to eliminate poor-quality learning materials and ensure access to accurate, curriculum-compliant textbooks.
