Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister Outlines New Policy Focus

On September 17, 2026, in Abuja, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, reiterated its commitment to a foreign policy centered on national interest, strategic autonomy, reciprocity, and beneficial partnerships. The minister emphasized that Nigeria's foreign policy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is guided by the Four Ds: Demography, Development, Democracy, and Diaspora, with a strong focus on economic diplomacy.

She highlighted the importance of leveraging Nigeria's youthful population through education, technology, and entrepreneurship to enhance international economic relationships. Odumegwu-Ojukwu assured that Nigeria would maintain robust relations with its neighbors and engage constructively with global partners.

She also mentioned efforts to revive inactive Joint Commissions and Bi-National Commissions to foster cooperation in various sectors. The minister emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs serves as the official communication channel between diplomatic missions and the Nigerian Government, ensuring proper coordination and safety for diplomats.
