Government Cuts Transport Fares with CNG and Electric Vehicles

The Federal Government has announced lower transport fares on selected routes across Nigeria, attributed to the deployment of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles. The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV), led by Executive Chairman Ismaeel Ahmed, revealed these changes in a statement by Head of Brand and Communications Onyekachi Eke.
CNG buses on routes such as Kubwa–Berger and Apo–Nyanya/Mararaba in the Federal Capital Territory now charge ₦500, down from ₦1,000. In Lagos, fares have decreased significantly, with the Ikorodu–Fadeyi route dropping from ₦1,200 to ₦680.
Enugu has also benefited from 100 CNG buses, with fares on the Enugu–Nsukka route reduced from ₦3,000 to ₦1,600. The initiative has seen approximately 3.2 million passengers transported, resulting in savings exceeding ₦3.5 billion.
Additional reductions are proposed in various states, including Akwa Ibom, Edo, and Delta, with ongoing developments in CNG stations and electric vehicle infrastructure.
