Tinubu and Governors Collaborate to Lower Transport Costs

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu revealed that state governors have voluntarily committed to reducing transportation costs across Nigeria. This initiative will be supported by a joint federal-state committee to ensure that the benefits of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) translate into lower transport fares for commuters by October 1, 2026.

In a statement titled ‘Cheaper Fuel Must Mean Cheaper Transport Fares,’ Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the discussions held with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, emphasizing the importance of leveraging CNG and electric vehicles to lower costs. The Federal Government is heavily investing in this transition, with over 120,000 vehicles converted to CNG and plans for an additional 100,000 conversion kits.

The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund is financing over 100 gas projects, including the establishment of 1,000 CNG refuelling stations nationwide. Tinubu highlighted that intra-state transport is where high fuel costs impact Nigerians most directly, and the governors' initiative aims to alleviate this burden.
