Nigeria Eliminates Data Costs for Students' Education

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the removal of data costs for millions of students accessing approved educational platforms, a significant step towards enhancing digital education. Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa revealed this initiative on Thursday during the launch of the Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content in Nigeria.

This intervention aims to ensure that internet connectivity costs do not hinder access to quality education, particularly for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Alausa emphasized that the initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and seeks to address barriers to digital learning.

The initiative responds to Nigeria's ongoing education crisis and aims to bridge the digital divide affecting many children. Previous efforts included zero-rated access to the Nigeria Learning Passport, developed by the Federal Government and UNICEF, which provides digital curriculum content.

Alausa stated that this initiative is part of a broader effort to transform the education sector through digitalization under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative.
