Police Arrest 46 Over Blockade of Peter Obi's Convoy

On September 8, 2026, the convoy of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, was obstructed in Benue State, leading to the arrest of 46 individuals by the Benue State Police Command. Commissioner of Police Cletus Nwadiogbu stated that police officers made a tactical decision to prevent potential violence and safely escorted Obi back to the airport.

The incident was described as creating tension and could have escalated into violence. The campaign team of Seyi Makinde from the Allied People’s Movement condemned the obstruction, labeling it as disturbing and unacceptable.

They emphasized that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to move freely within the country without prior permission, referencing Sections 41(1) and 40 of the 1999 Constitution. The Benue State Government's claim that Obi did not seek prior permission for his visit was deemed unacceptable by Makinde's team.
