FG Urges States to Own National Water Compact for Security

The Federal Government of Nigeria has called on the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to take greater ownership of the Nigeria National Water Compact 2026–2030, which is crucial for strengthening the country’s water security. This appeal was made by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, FNSE, during a nationwide stakeholders’ consultation workshop held in Abuja.

He highlighted that water is vital for public health, food security, agriculture, and national security, while identifying challenges such as rapid population growth, climate change, and inadequate infrastructure. The Compact aims to provide a roadmap for addressing these issues and is structured around three pillars: Water for People, Water for Food Security, and Water for Planet.

Prof. Utsev urged states and stakeholders to review the draft and submit recommendations. He also mentioned that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been briefed on the Compact's progress, and efforts are being made to secure state governors' commitment to its implementation.

Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, praised the initiative for fostering collaboration among various sectors.
