Mining Tragedy in Plateau State Raises Safety Concerns

A tragic incident occurred in Zurak, Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, where 37 miners are suspected to have died due to carbon monoxide and sulphur gas emissions. The Nigerian government has commenced an investigation into the tragedy, believed to have been caused by toxic gas accumulation in poorly ventilated underground tunnels.

Following the incident, 20 survivors were rushed to the hospital for treatment. The Minister of Solid Minerals, Kayode Fayemi, expressed condolences to the victims' families and highlighted the need for improved safety standards in the mining sector.

Fayemi previously ordered the closure of the mine site in 2017 due to complaints about illegal operations, including those by Alhaji Dan China, purported owner of the mine. Despite the dangers, illegal mining activities have continued, driven by poverty and hunger, leading to numerous fatalities in the sector.

The federal government recently lifted a ban on mining imposed in 2019, emphasizing the need for safety regulations to prevent future tragedies.
