Fayemi: 37 Miners' Deaths Could Have Been Prevented

Kayode Fayemi, the former governor of Ekiti State, expressed his condolences regarding the tragic incident where 37 miners died from carbon monoxide exposure at a mining site in Zurak, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred last week, leading to the hospitalization of 25 miners.

Following the federal government's order, the mining site was shut down. Fayemi, who served as the Minister of Solid Minerals Development from 2015 to 2018 during the administration of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, lamented that the situation could have been prevented.

He visited the Zurak mining site in 2017 alongside Babagana Monguno, the National Security Adviser. Fayemi called for the immediate closure of the mine and the arrest of illegal Chinese operators.

He identified Alhaji Dan as the purported owner of the mine, who had declared a desire for police action against him but was later released.
