FG, SSANU, NASU Finalize 2009 Agreement Negotiations

The Federal Government, alongside the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), has concluded negotiations on the 2009 agreement concerning non-academic staff in Nigerian universities. Peter Adeyemi, the president of NASU, confirmed that a blueprint for the deal is anticipated by the end of the month.

The negotiations, which have been ongoing since October, were prompted by the unions' protests over the slow pace of the renegotiation process. The unions have rejected the government's proposal of a 30% salary increment, insisting instead on a 40% increase, similar to what was granted to their academic counterparts, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The 2009 agreement, which was supposed to be renegotiated every three years, has faced delays, leading to multiple industrial actions in public universities. The government concluded negotiations with ASUU in December, marking the end of a 16-year process.
