NASU Demands Equal Allowances with ASUU in Talks

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) is demanding equal allowances to those received by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) during ongoing renegotiation talks with the federal government. NASU General Secretary Peter Adeyemi made this position known while speaking to journalists in Geneva, Switzerland, on the sidelines of the 114th session of the International Labour Conference.

Adeyemi insisted that non-academic workers deserve equal welfare benefits, particularly following the federal government's approval of a 40% increase in allowances for ASUU members. He highlighted the critical roles non-academic staff play in universities and argued that they should not be treated differently regarding welfare benefits.

NASU has rejected an earlier offer of a 30% increase, stating it fell short of their expectations. Adeyemi expressed hope that ongoing discussions would yield positive outcomes capable of improving the welfare of non-academic staff across federal tertiary institutions.
