Federal Government Halts King’s College Concession Amid Protests

The Federal Government has suspended the proposed concession of King’s College, Lagos, to the school’s old students’ association for two weeks following protests by workers in the Federal Ministry of Education. This decision was made after a meeting on Wednesday night between education ministers and leaders of the ministry’s labor unions, which lasted several hours.

The resulting five-point agreement included the immediate suspension of industrial action by the unions, ensuring that protesting workers would not face victimization, and pausing the concession implementation. Additionally, a seven-member committee was established to examine the agreement between the Federal Government and the King’s College old students’ association.

Protests included chants for the removal of Minister of Education Tunji Alausa and involved workers from the Joint Council representing four major staff unions, who argued that King’s College should remain a national educational asset under public management.
