FG Urges Media to Promote Responsible Reporting in Nigeria

On Wednesday, during a conference organized by the White Ink Institute in Abuja, Nigeria's Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, urged the media to exercise greater care in their language, particularly concerning security operations. He warned that vague and misleading definitions could deepen societal divisions and erode national unity.

Idris highlighted the influence of media narratives on public perception, stressing that careless reporting could reinforce stereotypes and create mistrust among citizens. He noted the government's ongoing efforts under President Bola Tinubu to rebuild trust and strengthen unity through initiatives like the National Values Charter.

This charter outlines the government's responsibilities and promotes responsible citizenship. Idris also called for journalists to uphold their profession in the fast-paced digital era, ensuring accurate and context-sensitive reporting.

He emphasized that true security goes beyond physical protection, focusing on trust and dignity for all citizens, while also addressing the rise in security incidents linked to ethnic and religious identities.
