Federal Government Warns of Lagos-Calabar Highway Closure

The federal government has issued a warning regarding the potential shutdown of the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway within two weeks if road users do not adhere to safety regulations and construction restrictions. Olufemi Dare, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, stated that this directive comes from Engr. David Umahi, the Minister of Works.

The warning follows a series of fatal accidents and reckless driving incidents along the highway, which is currently undergoing construction involving 20 major bridges over a 103-kilometre stretch. Dare noted that motorists frequently exceed the 30km per hour speed limit, with some driving up to 120km per hour in construction zones.

He announced a ban on speeding, illegal U-turns, and the operation of commercial motorcycles and tricycles on the highway. Additionally, the Federal Government is collaborating with the Lagos State Police Command to enhance security and traffic management, with increased police presence along the route.
