Federal Government Acts Against Vandalism on Highway

The Federal Government has raised concerns over extensive vandalism along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, where vandals have stolen approximately five kilometres of clear-view fencing and manhole covers over an estimated 18-kilometre stretch. Engineer Olufemi Dare, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, disclosed these details during a press briefing on Monday.

Despite ongoing security patrols, the thefts are reportedly occurring at night, with vandals also targeting directional signs for their metal components. The highway remains under construction, with critical infrastructure yet to be completed, prompting the government to consider replacing some fencing with blockwork, which has shown to be less vulnerable to vandalism.

To enhance surveillance, the installation of CCTV cameras is being contemplated. Additionally, a crackdown on illegal activities along the highway has been initiated, including a ban on illegal occupations, roadside hawking, and the use of motorcycles and tricycles.

CP Fatai Oladipo has committed to increasing police presence along the highway following discussions with Engineer Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works.
