Federal Government Issues Ultimatum for Lagos-Calabar Highway Safety

The Federal Government has mandated a two-week compliance period for motorists and road users on the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, threatening to shut down the route if safety violations are not addressed. Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, announced this ultimatum during a highway inspection on Monday, citing dangerous speeding, vandalism, and illegal parking as major concerns.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, expressed alarm over ongoing safety violations. Dare emphasized that the highway is still under construction and should not have been opened to traffic, urging a maximum speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour in construction zones.

He warned that unsafe practices, including unauthorized U-turns and illegal parking of articulated vehicles, would lead to prosecution. Additionally, the government plans to remove illegal structures along the highway and has coordinated with the Lagos State Police Command to enhance security along the route.
