Major Rehabilitation Approved for Lagos Airport Terminal 1

The Nigerian Federal Executive Council approved a significant rehabilitation project for Terminal 1 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on July 2025. The project, costing approximately N712,258,565,482, aims to overhaul the nearly 50-year-old facility to meet global standards while minimizing disruption during the construction phase.

The work will take 22 months and will involve a temporary full closure of Terminal 1, with an 8,000 m² departure hall expected to be 90% complete by early 2026. During the closure, passenger arrivals will be shifted to Terminal 2, which will handle 1,500 peak hour passengers.

The project includes stripping Terminal 1 down to its concrete core for reinforcement and rebuilding with modern systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, security, and baggage handling features. The contract is held by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, which will supervise the project in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Aviation and FAAN.
