FG to Accelerate MMIA Terminal Reconstruction After Fire

On Tuesday, Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, announced plans to accelerate the reconstruction of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) terminal in Lagos after a fire incident engulfed the building on Monday. Keyamo spoke during a tour of the ground floor of MMIA, indicating that the terminal would be completely rehabilitated.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had previously approved a contract worth N987 billion for massive infrastructure upgrades across the country’s airports, including the MMIA terminal, which is expected to consume N712.26 billion. The reconstruction aims to strip down the terminal's structural frame and rebuild it to meet international standards.

Keyamo also mentioned that the entire mechanical and electrical systems would be redone. Additionally, he noted that weather monitoring equipment from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) was damaged in the fire, affecting air traffic control operations.
