Nigerian Government to Develop Electricity Subsidy Plan for Low-Income Households

The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Power, is set to introduce an electricity subsidy plan to shield vulnerable households from increasing tariffs. This plan, disclosed during the Nigeria Energy Forum 2025 in Lagos, aims to ensure the long-term commercial viability of the power sector.

Additionally, efforts are underway to enhance liquidity, corporate governance, and service delivery across the electricity value chain. The government has committed N700 billion to address meter challenges and plans to deploy 1.1 million meters by the end of 2025, with an annual target of two million meters for the subsequent five years.

Various financial partnerships, including with the World Bank, NSIA, and JICA, are being mobilized to accelerate renewable energy deployment and expand electricity access.
