FG Expands Deep Blue Project for Maritime Security

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, announced plans to expand the Deep Blue Project to vulnerable maritime corridors, including Bakassi and Igbokoda. Minister Adegboyega Oyetola disclosed this during a graduation ceremony for 492 advanced combat personnel on Thursday.

The expansion aims to strengthen maritime security and protect the nation's waterways. The Deep Blue Project has already contributed to a record of zero piracy incidents in Nigerian waters over the past four years, attributed to the project's implementation and collaboration among security agencies.

Oyetola noted that the expansion would improve operational capabilities and enhance maritime security assets. The project, launched in 2021, has significantly reduced piracy incidents in the Gulf of Guinea by 70%.

The graduation ceremony also featured the presentation of certificates to personnel trained in various operational units of the Deep Blue Project, highlighting Nigeria's commitment to maintaining a secure maritime environment.
