FG To Inaugurate National Building Code Advisory Committee

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, is set to inaugurate the National Building Code Advisory Committee. This decision comes after the recent launch of a Ministerial Task Team to investigate the causes of building failures in Nigeria.

Speaking at a workshop in Lagos, Dangiwa emphasized the need to address the root causes of building collapses, such as poor design, substandard materials, and weak enforcement of building codes. The National Building Safety Structural Integrity Initiative (NBSSII) was outlined as a comprehensive plan to audit structures, implement a uniform inspection and certification system, enforce strict building codes, and improve reporting mechanisms.

The Minister highlighted the importance of joint responsibility among professionals, regulators, and the public to ensure the safety, resilience, and sustainability of buildings in the country. Governor of Lagos State praised the collaboration as a step towards a safer city and emphasized the significance of initiatives like the Certified Structural Integrity Programme (CSIP) in ensuring building safety.
