Nigerian govt, Lagos join forces to tackle building collapses

The Nigerian government and Lagos State have teamed up to address the issue of building collapses that have claimed hundreds of lives in recent years. The National Building Safety and Structural Integrity Initiative (NBSSII) was launched to conduct audits of existing structures nationwide, enforce uniform inspection and certification standards, deploy mapping technology, and ensure continuous monitoring.

The initiative aims to address the root causes of building failures, such as poor design, substandard materials, and weak enforcement of regulations. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development emphasized the importance of restoring trust by ensuring that every structure meets safety standards.

The partnership between the federal and state governments was hailed as a milestone in creating a safer city, with a focus on collective responsibility among regulators, industry professionals, and the public. The initiative will first be implemented in Lagos before expanding nationwide, with authorities promising stiff penalties for non-compliance and a public awareness campaign to empower citizens to demand structural safety.
