FG Partners with Butchers to Modernize Nigeria's Abattoirs

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) has committed to collaborating with the National Union of Butchery Workers/National Butchers Union of Nigeria to modernize abattoirs and enhance Nigeria's livestock value chain. This announcement was made by Honourable Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha during a courtesy visit from the union's leadership on Wednesday, 30 July 2026, in Abuja.

Maiha emphasized the vital role of butchers in meat production and food security, acknowledging their contributions to the sector. He stated that the establishment of the FMLD reflects the government's recognition of the livestock sector's economic potential.

The Ministry plans to modernize livestock production through investments in ranching, improved practices, and modern abattoirs. Maiha noted the need to replace outdated slaughter facilities with hygienic, compliant ones and announced support for capacity building and specialized training for personnel.

He urged the association to invest in modern abattoirs and leverage financing opportunities to expand their businesses, highlighting Nigeria's potential as a major exporter of quality meat products.
