FG to Ban Open Livestock Slaughter, Modernize Industry

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to ban the open slaughter of livestock as part of its initiative to modernize the red meat industry and enhance the country's position in the export market. This announcement was made by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, during the launch of Olam Agri’s TruValue Cattle Feed in Kaduna.

Maiha stated that the government has begun developing modern abattoirs and will require livestock to pass through feedlots and meet specific standards before slaughter. He mentioned that groundbreaking ceremonies for two abattoirs and a mini abattoir have already taken place in the Offa axis, with another facility under construction in Abuja, capable of processing 1,000 bulls and 3,000 small ruminants daily.

The minister emphasized that the establishment of feedlots and modern slaughter facilities is crucial for producing quality meat for both local consumption and export. He also noted that Nigeria has potential buyers for its red meat from regions including the Gulf, Middle East, and Egypt.
