FG Investigates Gas Leak in Degema, Promises Support

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to probe a gas leak in Degema, Rivers State, following persistent gas seepage in the area. On July 1, 2026, a delegation led by Senator Ekperikp Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, visited the community to address growing fears regarding health and environmental impacts.

The delegation included Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and was received by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The visit aimed to provide immediate humanitarian support and a comprehensive solution to the ongoing gas seepage crisis.

The NUPRC had previously launched an investigation into the mysterious gas bubbling incidents in March. The delegation assured the community of ongoing federal commitment to resolving the issue, including the provision of potable water and healthcare support.

Preliminary investigations indicated contamination of underground water sources, and further studies are expected to commence by the end of July.
