Nigeria to Repatriate 100 Citizens from Ethiopian Prisons

The Nigerian government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is set to repatriate 100 Nigerians from prisons in Ethiopia. This initiative follows a transfer agreement signed on June 10, 2026, between Nigeria's Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, and Ethiopia's Minister of Justice, Hanna Arayaselassi.

The agreement provides a legal framework for the transfer of Nigerian inmates serving sentences in Ethiopia back to Nigeria, with 98 Nigerians currently in Ethiopian prisons, comprising 96 men and two women. The arrangement is designed for inmates who have at least one year remaining on their sentences.

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria's Ambassador to Ethiopia, assured the inmates that the Nigerian government would not abandon them despite the circumstances. This initiative aligns with Nigeria's foreign policy agenda focused on citizen welfare and diplomacy.
