FG Under Fire from NBA Over Withheld Osun LG Funds

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has criticized the federal government for withholding statutory allocations meant for local government councils in Osun State. In a letter dated August 19, 2025, addressed to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the NBA called the action unconstitutional, illegal, and a dangerous affront to judicial rulings.

The association urged the government to respect the rule of law and refrain from setting a dangerous precedent that could erode public confidence in democratic institutions. The NBA highlighted key court rulings, including one in Lagos State in 2004, which clarified the legal status of local government leadership.

The association emphasized that the current PDP official elected in February 2025 is the valid and legitimate official entitled to receive statutory allocations. The NBA warned that withholding funds violates constitutional provisions and urged the AGF to act promptly to prevent a constitutional breach.

They also promised to institute a public interest lawsuit if the funds are not released.
