Nigeria and UNDP Launch AI Innovation in Universities

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is set to launch an initiative aimed at transforming Nigerian universities into AI innovation and digital talent hubs. Vice President Kashim Shettima will officiate the flag-off on April 7, 2026, at the University of Lagos, marking the first University Innovation Pod (UNIPOD) in Africa.

This initiative, disclosed by Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, aims to reconfigure Nigeria's development architecture by fostering innovation and enterprise creation within universities. The UNIPOD initiative will address the disconnect between formal education and labor market outcomes, providing a structured platform for idea development and enterprise translation.

The rollout will extend to several states, including Abia, Akwa Ibom, Nasarawa, Benue, and Borno, with the goal of reaching 500,000 learners and supporting 1,500 to 2,000 startups. Elsi Attafuah, UNDP Nigeria's resident representative, emphasized the initiative's potential to position Nigeria as a leader in the digital talent ecosystem.
