FG Launches Committee to Streamline Security Agencies

On Wednesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee tasked with reviewing and rationalizing the proliferation of security agencies across the country. The committee, led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation Georg Akum, aims to address the growing number of unaccredited quasi-security outfits that have emerged.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to streamline Nigeria's security architecture and enhance the efficiency and accountability of agencies responsible for safeguarding lives and property. The committee will compile a comprehensive inventory of security and paramilitary outfits at federal and state levels, examine their legal mandates, and assess areas of overlap and conflict.

It will also review existing frameworks, identify gaps, and recommend measures to align the security system with national priorities and international best practices. The committee's membership includes representatives from various security and defense ministries and is expected to submit a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations within an approved timeframe.
