FG Inaugurates Committee to Streamline Security Agencies

The Federal Government of Nigeria has established an inter-ministerial committee to review and rationalize the numerous security and paramilitary agencies operating across the country. Inaugurated by Georg Akum, the committee is part of efforts to streamline Nigeria's security framework.

Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana represents the initiative, which seeks to address the increasing number of unaccredited quasi-security outfits and improve coordination among agencies.

The committee's report will guide government decisions on restructuring and strengthening the security sector. It is expected to compile a comprehensive inventory of security paramilitary outfits, examine their legal operational mandates, identify overlapping areas of conflict, and assess the impact of emerging security outfits.

The committee will also recommend reforms aimed at improving accountability and reducing redundancy within the system. Additionally, it is tasked with proposing policy and legal institutional measures, including potential mergers, harmonization, reclassification, or dissolution of agencies as necessary.

The committee comprises members from major security government institutions, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and the Ministry of Defence.
