Nigeria Launches Major Sports Infrastructure Overhaul

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a nationwide sports infrastructure overhaul, approving a significant upgrade package that includes the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. This initiative, announced by the National Sports Commission (NSC) following a tender board meeting, aims to restore Nigeria's sports facilities to international standards.

The project encompasses extensive renovations to the stadium, including improvements to the main bowl, tartan track, dressing rooms, media center, VIP corporate suites, public address system, security systems, and the stadium's roof membrane. Additional plans include establishing a high-performance center, rehabilitating a swimming pool, constructing two new training pitches, and building a 200-bed athlete hostel.

The project is part of a broader strategy to develop sports as a vehicle for youth engagement and economic growth. NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko described the initiative as a turning point for Nigeria's sports development, emphasizing the importance of creating sustainable opportunities for future generations.

The NSC also approved support for states hosting the National Sports Festival.
