FG Urged to Adapt China's Poverty Model for Nigeria

At a high-level workshop organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN) in Abuja, experts, diplomats, and media stakeholders called on the Federal Government to adapt relevant aspects of China’s poverty reduction model to Nigeria’s specific socio-economic and political realities. They argued that Nigeria's persistent poverty necessitates a shift from short-term welfare interventions to structural policies aimed at enhancing the productive capacity of poor citizens, expanding economic opportunities, and improving access to infrastructure and social services.

Sun Xuekun, representing the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, highlighted China's historic achievements in poverty reduction, stating that over 800 million people have been lifted out of poverty since 1978. He noted that China eradicated absolute poverty and achieved the United Nations 2030 Agenda poverty reduction target ten years ahead of schedule through targeted interventions and significant investments in poverty alleviation.
