Experts Urge FG to Intensify Military Action Against Bandits

Experts from Nextier Research, Dr. Chukwuma Okoli and Dr.

Ndu Nwokolo, have called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to enhance military operations and impose stricter market restrictions to counteract the evolving tactics of bandits in the North West region. A report indicates that from January to June 2026, at least 3,612 people were kidnapped across Nigeria, with the North West accounting for 55% of these victims.

The report attributes a shift in bandit tactics to increased military offensives and community vigilance, making it harder for bandits to access local markets for supplies. It is recommended that the government construct rural access roads to enable security agencies to reach remote hideouts effectively.

Additionally, strengthening traditional institutions and local vigilance groups is advised to improve intelligence gathering. The report emphasizes the need for the government to deny bandits access to markets to undermine their operational capabilities and reduce the effectiveness of their kidnapping tactics.
