Ekiti Commissioner Denounces FGM as Health Violation

Oyebanji Filani, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Health, reaffirmed the state's commitment to eradicating female genital mutilation (FGM) during a training session in Ado Ekiti. He described FGM as a harmful practice with no health benefits and questioned why mothers would subject their daughters to it despite its harmful consequences.

Filani represented Mr. Olusola Gbenga Igotun, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry.

He warned that the government would prosecute anyone found culpable of FGM, which can lead to immediate and long-term complications, including severe pain, shock, excessive bleeding, and exposure to infections such as HIV and hepatitis. Mr.

Agn Oyeniran from UNFPA highlighted the psychological trauma and increased risks associated with FGM, urging health educators and stakeholders to intensify campaigns against the practice. Dupe Amodu from the World Health Organization classified FGM as a violation of human rights and a major public health concern, expressing concern over its continued prevalence and severe health impacts.
