NHRC Advocates for Ending Harmful Practices Against Women

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), led by Executive Secretary Toni Ojukwu, has urged for an end to harmful practices against women in Nigeria. During a strategic forum held in Abuja, the NHRC emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions and development partners to develop guidelines aimed at eliminating harmful socio-cultural practices that impact women's rights and promote gender equity.

The NHRC's Director of Women and Children, Ngozi Okoy, highlighted ongoing engagements with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community leaders to foster dialogue and community ownership of reforms. The initiative also aims to address issues such as child marriage, promote girl child education, and tackle healthcare gaps and labor-related inequities.

The NHRC's efforts are supported by the Ford Foundation, which is focused on advancing women's rights and child protection policies in Nigeria.
