Ekiti State Commits to Eradicate Female Genital Mutilation

The Ekiti State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating female genital mutilation (FGM) and gender-based violence. Dr.
Oyebanji Filani, representing the state commission for health and human services, described FGM as a harmful practice with no health benefits. He questioned why mothers would subject their daughters to such practices despite the severe consequences.
The remarks were made during a two-day training organized in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Ekiti State Ministry of Health. Filani warned that the government would prosecute anyone found culpable of FGM, which often results in immediate and long-term complications, including severe pain, shock, excessive bleeding, and exposure to infections such as HIV and hepatitis.
Mr. Agn Oyeniran from UNFPA highlighted the psychological trauma and increased risks of complications during childbirth associated with FGM.
The campaign aims to raise awareness and encourage community participation to end the practice.
