FHA Secures Land for Affordable Housing in 28 States

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has announced the acquisition of prime land in 28 states and has begun construction on various housing projects, including the FHA Green City Estate in Abuja. Ezekiel Etuk, the FHA Executive Director of Estate Services, stated that the FHA is currently working on the FHA Estate in Bwari, Abuja, which consists of 336 housing units, with a target commissioning date before the end of the year.

The FHA was established under the National Development Plan in 1973 to coordinate and execute the government’s housing agenda for different income groups. Despite delivering thousands of housing units, many of its older estates are deteriorating, with issues such as poor maintenance and infrastructure decay.

In 2022, the then Housing Minister directed the FHA’s Southwest Zonal management to seek private sector funding to address these issues, but no significant progress has been reported. The FHA's efforts aim to enhance access to affordable housing and create jobs, as studies suggest that each new home can generate multiple direct and indirect jobs.
