The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has set October 15, 2026, as the date for the next electoral congress of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF). This announcement comes as Nigeria experiences a steady rise in its global basketball ranking, with the latest FIBA rankings placing the women's national team, D'Tigress, at 8th in the world.

The decision to fix the election date, communicated in a letter dated March 16, 2026, is intended to affirm the legitimacy of the NBBF's leadership under Engr Musa Ahm Kida, who has been navigating a turbulent administrative period marked by crises and international sanctions. The NBBF's governance has been under scrutiny since 2017, but recent improvements have been acknowledged, with the Nigerian sports commission endorsing the need for unity within the basketball community.

Director General Bukola Olopad emphasized the importance of aligning with FIBA's position to end divisions within the basketball fraternity.
