FIDA Nigeria Calls for Probe into Minna Custody Deaths

The International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Nigeria, has demanded an independent investigation into the deaths of 37 individuals who reportedly died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State. In a statement signed by FIDA Nigeria Country Vice President Eliana Martins and National Publicity Secretary Chineze Obianyo, the organization expressed serious concerns regarding the state's responsibility to protect the lives and dignity of detainees, particularly noting reports of children among the victims, including a seven-year-old.

Survivors described severe overcrowding, intense heat, and inadequate ventilation in the detention facility. FIDA emphasized the need for accountability and answers regarding the circumstances of the deaths, calling for a full investigation into the arrests, detention conditions, and medical assistance availability.

While welcoming the Federal Government's decision to form an independent committee to investigate and suspend involved officers, FIDA insisted that the investigation must be independent, transparent, and evidence-led.
