FIFA-CAF Delegation to Address NFF Leadership Crisis

A joint FIFA-CAF delegation is scheduled to visit Nigeria on September 14 and 15 to consult with football stakeholders and evaluate the leadership vacuum left by the resignations of NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and the NFF board. This visit is welcomed as Nigerian football seeks an orderly and credible transition.

However, concerns are raised about whether this intervention will lead to systemic change or simply replace existing leadership with the same interests. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, marking the first time Nigeria missed two consecutive tournaments since 1994.

Additionally, the Super Falcons did not qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing to South Africa, and the Flying Eagles suffered a 4–1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the WAFU B final. These results highlight ongoing issues within Nigerian football governance.
