DFB Vice-President Critiques FIFA's Stake Sale Proposal

On Wednesday, Hans-Joachim Watzke, the vice-president of the German Football Association (DFB) and president of Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, condemned FIFA's proposal to create a semi-private subsidiary that would sell stakes in its competitions, including the World Cup. He described the plan as “an outright attack on football.” FIFA announced this initiative on Tuesday, aiming to raise $4.2 billion, but it still requires approval from the 38-member FIFA council and a majority of its 211 member associations.

Watzke stated that many in European football share his concerns, indicating a potential united front among European federations against the proposal. He referenced the success of European teams in the World Cup, suggesting that a collective opposition could have significant influence.

UEFA, which has been critical of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, also condemned the plan, labeling it a sale of the game’s “soul.” Additionally, CONCACAF expressed concerns regarding the lack of due process in the proposal.
