FIFA Delays Ruling on NFF's Protest Over DR Congo Players

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is awaiting a ruling from FIFA concerning its protest over the eligibility of players from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) during the 2026 World Cup African playoff held in November. Nigeria's Super Eagles failed to secure automatic qualification after losing to DR Congo on penalties.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau stated in an interview that they expect a response from FIFA, while General Secretary Dr. Moham Sanusi emphasized that the federation does not believe they have a valid case.

The complaint centers on allegations of improper nationality switches by DR Congo players, which contradict FIFA's regulations requiring players to hold a passport from the country they wish to represent. The situation is complicated by Congolese law, which does not recognize dual nationality.

Meanwhile, NFF members, including midfielder Alex Iwobi, remain optimistic about the outcome. Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, suggested that whichever party loses the case may approach the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
