NFF Denies Reports on Nigeria's World Cup Hopes

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has refuted widespread reports suggesting that Nigeria's hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are over, asserting that FIFA has yet to issue any formal communication regarding the eligibility dispute involving DR Congo. Ademola Olajire, NFF's Director of Communications, stated that the federation remains active and anticipates a formal response from FIFA.

The controversy stems from a match in November 2025, where DR Congo defeated Nigeria in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the CAF playoff final. The NFF filed a formal protest in December, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, violating Congolese law on dual citizenship.

Moham Sanusi, NFF's General Secretary, emphasized that FIFA's review of the matter has no specified timeline, causing frustration as Nigeria prepares for the inter-confederation playoff scheduled for March 26-31, 2026, in Mexico.
