Fire Destroys 17 Shops at Sabo Market in Lagos

On Tuesday at approximately 1:10 a.m., a fire broke out at Sabo Market in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, resulting in the destruction of 17 out of 32 shops in the affected section. According to Olawale Afolabi, spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), preliminary investigations indicated that the fire originated in one shop and spread to adjacent stalls, likely due to an electrical surge while power was active.

Emergency responders from LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived promptly and managed to contain the fire, preventing further damage to other market sections. A post-incident assessment confirmed that provisions, groceries, foodstuffs, and other merchandise were lost, but fortunately, no deaths or injuries occurred.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the permanent secretary of LASEMA, urged market leaders and residents to prioritize electrical safety, including proper wiring and regular inspections of electrical installations. He also encouraged timely reporting of emergencies through the state's toll-free numbers, 112 and 767.
